Pharr Tennis Center

A cherished community resource that provides social, recreational, and sustainable landscape benefits to East Austin.

In collaboration with Kirksey Architecture and Carter Design Associates, the project included a major renovation of the Pharr Tennis Center alongside an updated arrival courtyard, replacement of all asphalt courts and court lighting, improved ADA accessibility throughout, and on-site rainwater management features that improve drainage, increase ecological diversity, and serve as beautiful amenities. The $3.2 million project demonstrates PARD’s commitment to sustainability with an upcoming Silver SITES and LEED Gold Certification.

Studio Balcones led the landscape design for the Pharr Tennis Center renovation that includes 3,800 square feet of rain gardens, one-acre of restored Blackland Prairie, recycled/reused paving material throughout, and a solar array. The arrival courtyard centers around three existing Heritage Red Oaks preserved with extra care. The pavement surrounding the trees was removed by hand, soil was decompacted, and the demoed pavement artfully re-laid to prevent future root compaction. A public art sculpture was also part of the design. Park stakeholders reviewed the proposed design and offered valuable feedback through online engagement given COVID restrictions. Today, on-site signage educates visitors about the sustainable site features that improve ecosystem services for both people and wildlife.
